About Eczema
Eczema appears most commonly in infants and young children, with evidence of the condition presenting itself in 60% of children before the age of 1 and in 90% of children by the age of 5. (3) However, eczema can affect patients of all ages. A variety of factors can trigger eczema, including weather conditions, allergens, strong fragrances, and even heavy stress. Patients with eczema may experience red, itchy patches of skin along with rashes or even seeping sores.
Some of the different types of eczema include:
- Contact dermatitis: Contact dermatitis is a form of eczema that occurs when you are exposed to a specific allergen or “trigger.” This can cause an itching or stinging rash, as well as dry or itchy skin. For patients with contact dermatitis, it is important that we determine the aggravating irritant to provide the most effective treatment.
- Dyshidrotic eczema: Dyshidrotic eczema is a form of eczema that can cause small blisters to appear on various parts of the body. This form of eczema appears primarily on the soles of the feet and palms of the hands and around the edges of the fingers and toes.
- Nummular dermatitis: Nummular dermatitis is characterized by its coin-shaped lesions. These scaly patches can cause discomfort and itching in patients and can even ooze. This skin condition can affect people of all genders and ages, but men are more likely to be affected than women.
- Seborrheic dermatitis: Seborrheic dermatitis presents itself in the scalp, ears, eyebrows, and even sides of the nose. This condition causes itchy, flaking patches of skin and is commonly also referred to as dandruff.
- Stasis dermatitis: This condition causes blood to pool in the lower legs due to poor circulation. Itchy rashes, scaly patches, and swelling can all occur in the ankles, lower legs, or feet.
