5 Problems That Can Be Treated With Skin Resurfacing

Your skin is your largest organ as well as what the world sees. If you’re unhappy with your skin quality or would simply like to improve its health, vitality, and resilience, you’ll be happy to know that there are treatment options. Today’s aesthetic treatments don’t simply mask skin issues, they actually resolve them.

At Dermatology Institute & Skin Care Center, our dermatologist, Paul Yamauchi, MD, PhD, and our skin specialist Summer Nguyen Liew, MSPAS, PA-C, resolve issues and improve your skin quality with laser treatments at our Santa Monica, California, office. Our lasers include:

  • Fraxel® Dual
  • Candela™ V-Beam®
  • Candela Gentle®YAG
  • Candela GentleLASE
  • Allure® Image Omnilux Blue Light

Do you have skin issues? Following are five problems that skin resurfacing resolves.

1. Fine lines and wrinkles

If you worshiped the sun, you’ve probably paid a heavy price. The sun’s rays — which feel so warm and nourishing — damage your skin on its surface and at the DNA level.

One result of sun damage is fine lines or wrinkles. Sun damage not only degrades the quality of your skin but also thins it out, creating a loss of flexibility.

Skin resurfacing with lasers removes the outermost layer of your skin, which rids it of dulling dead cells. The heat from the laser also reaches the deepest layers, encouraging your skin to produce new collagen and elastin.

2. Melasma, sun spots, and freckles

Although you may have been born with freckles, you don’t have to live with them. Like sun spots and melasma — both of which are triggered by the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays — lasers can fade or erase freckles. We adjust the laser to target the excess pigment in lesions such as:

  • Freckles
  • Sun spots
  • Age spots
  • Melasma patches
  • Lentigines

The laser’s energy breaks up the pigment, shattering it so that your body eventually absorbs and excretes it. The heat also triggers a healing response in the treated skin, leaving the surrounding skin safe and unaffected.

3. Sagging

The production of new collagen and elastin that’s triggered by a laser treatment actually improves the quality and strength of your skin. As it rebuilds itself over the weeks to months following your treatment, it not only becomes smoother and thicker, but it also grows tighter.

While significant sagging can only be remedied with surgical correction, slight sagging improves dramatically with lasers. Regular laser treatments may keep you from ever needing the surgeon’s knife.

4. Visible veins and rosacea

Whether you have broken veins, red skin, pustules, or simply a smattering of spider veins around your nose, lasers can erase them. As with hyperpigmentation, we adjust the laser so it only targets the pigment in your broken veins or rosacea lesions.

The lasers dissolve broken or dysfunctional capillaries and veins so your body can absorb and excrete them. Lasers can also rid your skin of spider veins and varicose veins on your legs and other areas of your body.

5. Warts

Warts often resolve on their own over time. But if you don’t want to wait weeks or months to have clear and smooth skin again, we remove them in the office.

Warts, however, tend to recur. They’re caused by a viral infection. The virus stays in your body for life. You may need several laser wart treatments over time to keep your skin clear.
